Preventing fatal gun accidents

ROCKFORD, Ill (WIFR)--- A Rockford man is facing involuntary manslaughter charges after accidentally shooting his sister. Tragic accidents like this can be avoided by having a better understanding on gun safety.

Local firearm instructors say the two important things to consider is storage and education. Your gun and ammo should be stored separately and in a safe place.

Instructor Mary Parsons says the best safety feature on a gun is your finger.

"One of the main safety rules is that you always keep your finger on the slide until your sights are on the target, until you are ready to shoot and then also when you're coming off of that target," says Parsons.
