Police build relationships with kids at Hand on Museum

FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) Playing and pretending are things children do all the time, but on Tuesday they were joined by police officers at the Children's Hands on Museum in Freeport.

Stateline Area Crime Stoppers hosted an event that gave kids the opportunity to have fun with the cops. Their goal is to have a good relationship with children and create a positive impression of police officers. This is the first event planned, but the Illinois State Police, Freeport Police Department, and Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office want to host more.

"We want children when were out on the street to know that police officers are there to help them, that we’re their friends. So these non-enforcement type functions where we can interact with the children is just vitally important,” said Andy Schroeder with the Freeport Police Department.
