Police: 16 shell casings found, home hit by gunfire on Rockford's west side

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Police are investigating after officers say they found more than a dozen shell casings in the middle of the road on Rockford's west side.
Rockford Police say they found 16 spent .40 caliber shell casings when they responded to a shots fired call in the area of West State Street and Avon Street around 10:45 Thursday morning. Officers say a home north of the scene in the 1100 block of Mulberry Street had also been hit by gunfire.
A witness told officers he saw a silver, early 2000's Chevrolet Impala driving east on West State Street when the driver and front seat passenger both began to shoot north of West State Street. The witness reported that both suspects were armed with handguns and heard several shots fired before the suspect vehicle left eastbound and turned onto Chestnut Street.
