ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - A 33-year-old man was struck and killed by a car on 11th Street Thursday morning in Rockford.
“It's sad I've seen a lot of fatal accidents happen at this intersection and I think it's very dangerous," said Kimberly Taulbee, who lives at Rodeway Inn & Suites.
Around 4:30 a.m. Rockford Police responded to the 3800 block of 11th Street for reports of a pedestrian versus vehicle accident. Officers report that one person was hit by a car on 11th Street.
"You have to pay attention you have to be aware, stay off your cell phones, and I can't stress enough to use the crosswalks,” said Sgt. David Nicosia, Rockford Police Department.
Officials say that a 30-year-old woman and 33-year-old man were walking north on the west side of 11th Street when the man attempted to cross the street and was hit by a pickup truck. The man was taken to a hospital where he later died.
"Eleventh Street is a major state road so it is highly used there is a lot of vehicle traffic, there is a lot of pedestrian traffic. There are businesses, there are residents we get a little bit of everything so that is part of the reason why the speed limit is 50 mph,” Nicosia said.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 50-year-old man, is cooperating with investigators. No names are being released by authorities at this time.
