ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Nearly 1,600 Rockford area students packed into the Coronado Performing Arts Center for a free concert.

Rockford Symphony Orchestra conductor Steve Larson and education director Margo Stedman lead the students through an hour-long program of swing and jazz.

The "Orchestra Swings" is in partnership with Carnegie Hall's prestigious link-up program, which allows students to not just learn, but also interactively connect with a professional orchestra through singing, dancing and even playing the recorder.

"It's an important part of the cultural quality of life that we have here in Rockford," said Julie Thomas, RSO executive director. "This is something that I think enriches everyone's personalities and everyone's interaction with each other."
