UPDATE: Man killed in Rockford apartment fire identified

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Updated: April 16, 2019, 6:55 p.m.

The Winnebago County Coroner's Office identifies a 27-year-old man who died in a Rockford apartment fire Tuesday morning.

Xzavier Parker was identified as the victim.

The coroner's office says Parker was taken to an emergency hospital by a paramedic ambulance, but died despite lifesaving efforts.

The coroner says smoke inhalation was the preliminary cause of Parker's death.

A 27-year-old Rockford man is dead after an apartment fire early Tuesday morning.

The Rockford Fire Department responded to the 1000 block of North Court Street around 1 a.m. for reports of a structure fire. Crews said the fire started in a second floor apartment.

Fire officials say one victim was removed from the apartment and transported to local hospital in critical condition, and later died from his injuries.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The cause of the fatal fire remains under investigation. The damages are estimated at $10,000.
