ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Updated: Jan. 21, 2019, 10:30 p.m.

Rockford police scour the area of a shooting Jan. 21, 2019, near Kent and Ferguson streets in Rockford. Officers say one man died on the scene.

A 15-year-old boy is dead after being shot in the head around 4 p.m. on Rockford's southwest side.

At least ten squad cars responded to the shooting in the 700 block of Kent Street, where they found the teen lying in the street with fatal gunshot wounds to the head.

Police say the boy was with a group of his friends, walking down Kent Street in front of St. Anthony of Padua Church. The group was confronted by a car and then shots were fired killing the teen.

Neighbors say they hear gunshots very often in that area and it's a shame to see such a young person losing their life to a bullet.

"When I first seen it happen I was thinking like we are just stepping outside the house or stepping outside the store and we are seeing dead bodies and cops all around. We are hearing shootings and I like when it is going to stop," said Corey Brown, who lives nearby.

There have been no suspects identified at this time. Detectives with the Rockford Police Department are doing some follow-up investigations.
