Investigators say this isn't the first time they've been called to the Great Oaks apartment complex, but many living in the neighborhood are shocked by the violence.

"I was quite afraid that something in such a calm area could happen,” said Christian Coronel who lives at Great Oaks apartments.

Coronel home is located just steps away from where a deadly shooting that occurred Sunday night.

"Around eight o'clock, five to eight. We got called for shots fired and when my deputies got there they found an unresponsive male in the parking lot," Said Gary Caruana, Winnebago County sheriff.

25-year-old Anton Harris was pronounced dead at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. Many neighbors are surprised this happened so close to home.

"I've seen children go out and play, especially right now with the summer ending and the fall coming up upon us and it really caught me off guard to have something like this happen," said Coronel.

But officials say this isn't the first time something like this has happened in the area.

“We have had some issues there. Along with thefts and burglaries and those scenarios and situations, again we have had out narcotics teams out there also," said Caruana.

Great Oaks apartments and the Winnebago County sheriff’s office are teaming up to prevent future violence.

"Anytime that we could be proactive in that area we have been using a neighborhood watch type of environment and have meetings," said Caruana.

Coronel has some suggestions too, about keeping his neighbors safe.

"I just encourage people is to not stay outside after dark because that is why the most danger is present and you really don't see what is going on outside, even from 50 feet away, " said Coronel.

The great oaks apartment complex declined to comment on the shooting.
