UPDATE: One dead in small plane crash in Northern Illinois

UPDATE: MARENGO, Ill. (WIFR) -- The pilot killed in a plane crash in Marengo has been identified as 63-year-old Robert Sherman of Poplar Grove.

Investigators say Sherman's plane went down on Meyer Road in Marengo around 7:30 Saturday morning.

Sherman was the only one in the plane. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is still under investigation by the FAA and NTSB.

MARENGO, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities in northern Illinois say one person is dead after a small plane crashed into a cornfield.

The McHenry County coroner has not yet identified the victim.

Marengo Fire Department officials say the plane crashed either Friday night or Saturday morning and only one person was onboard.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. Officials believe it was a single-engine plane.

FFA officials say it's a home-built plane that crashed under unknown circumstances.
