UPDATE: ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- An early morning shooting at a party leaves one man dead and several others injured.

Stephanie Denard says she was woken up at 3 a.m. Sunday by large groups of people gathering on the street.

"That doesn't usually happen over here, it's pretty quiet. So I called 911 and said, 'Hey, I have a situation over here it seems to be getting out of hand or it's maybe going to get out of control,'" said Denard.

Denard says she tried to ignore the noise and managed to fall back to sleep but not for long.

"I was abruptly woken up by gunfire! It was just surreal after that. I just stood and I was like this is straight out of a movie scene," added Denard.

Around 5:30, police responded to multiple shots fired calls in the 400 block of Howard Avenue. A Rockford man was shot and killed and several other people were injured. Police say two men and two women in their 20's were taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

"We do have family that's been on the scene, we've been taking care of them. We did wrap up everything need here, at the scene right now, and we're taking him for x-rays and then taking him downtown," said Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz.

Neighbors say this is usually a quiet neighborhood and that most of the people living here are senior citizens. They knew something was up when they noticed too many cars parking on the block.

"You know, this doesn't happen on this block every day. This happened on our block today and somebody else's tomorrow. I'm sort of numb because this happens so much with so many kids and these choices," said Denard.

Denard says being a mother, the first thing on her mind was the heartbreak the victim's mother would go through.

Police are not releasing the names of the victims at the moment. An autopsy is scheduled this upcoming week.
