ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Local homeowners are trying to help spread solar energy with the annual North Central Illinois Solar Tour.

Five homes were open for visitors interested in learning more about renewable energy and energy efficiency. Homeowners discussed and answered questions about their systems with visitors. Each home had different types of solar options for visitors to check out to see if they want to jump on the solar train.

"I’ve had zero bad experiences with it, no bad surprises. It's been great to see basically zero dollars on my electric bill. It's like getting away from taxes, you never think you could not pay electricity but with this, you can stop paying your electrical bill basically," said Alex Prothero, a homeowner on the Solar Tour.
