New owner hopes to revive former Fatty McGee's building

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- An east side business with a history of crime could be getting a face lift.

Nearly two years after the owner of Fatty McGee's on East State St. was arrested for allegedly growing 1,100 marijuana plants, a new owner is hoping to get a liquor license for the boarded up building.

The new owner says she wants to open it as Charlie's Pub and Eatery. She says the inside has been updated, addressing old issues that condemned the building in the past.

Alderman Frank Beach says he is encouraged by the experience of this new owner.

"It's finally closed its doors and has been that way for some time and it doesn't look good on the street to have a building boarded up, especially in an area you're trying to revive and make whole again", says Beach.

The Winnebago County Liquor Board says they still have parking concerns for the building.

Meantime the vote was held over tonight, due to changes to the owner's business plans.
