Neighborhood sets up luminaries to honor local law enforcement
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- What started as a way to light up the sidewalks for the holidays has transitioned into a way one neighborhood is honoring and paying tribute to the Rockford Police.
The Rolling Green neighborhood started putting out luminaries last year to brighten up the subdivision during Christmas time, but this year they wanted to something special to pay tribute to our first responders.
Members of the Rolling Green neighborhood placed white and blue luminaries at the entrance of the subdivision. The neighborhood says it wanted to do something to honor and show the Rockford Police that they are thinking of them. The neighborhood says it hopes people who drive by the luminaries will be inspired to place some at their own homes.
"It wasn't a one-time thing because of one incident. Our police are really going through some difficult times right now in communities all over the country and we want them to know that here, we support them,” said 8th Ward Alderwoman Karen Hoffman.
Alderwoman Hoffman says the Rolling Green neighborhood wants to continue honoring first responders and hope when police drive by they will feel loved.
The Edgewater and Churchill Grove neighborhoods also took part in the luminary tradition by placing the luminaries all along the sidewalks.
