Coroner identifies motorcyclist in fatal Rockford accident

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Updated: April 8, 2019, 2:30 p.m.

The Winnebago County Coroner's Office identified Gary Lewis, 59, of Rockford, as the man who died in a motorcycle accident on Thursday.

Lewis died from blunt trauma of the chest and abdomen from the crash, according to an autopsy.

Rockford Police are investigating the death. Police say the man was driving south on Alpine on Wednesday when his motorcycle lost control.

Rockford Police tell 23 News that a motorcyclist has died after an accident Wednesday morning.

Officers say the driver was not wearing a helmet. He was driving south on Alpine when he went down.

Police have opened an investigation, but do not believe the victim was driving recklessly. No one else was hurt.

A 59-year-old driver is in the hospital with serious injuries after losing control Wednesday morning.

Rockford police responded to a motorcycle accident just before 8 a.m. in the 2400 block of South Alpine Road in Rockford.

They found a male driver from Rockford who was driving south on Alpine when he went down. He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Police say the victim was not wearing a helmet but did not appear to be driving recklessly.

No other car was involved.
