A man is recovering after being stabbed several times at Northern Illinois University's campus Saturday night.

The man was reportedly stabbed at a residence hall, even though the victim and the suspect were not affiliated with the university.

Police say the victim was registered to enter the resident hall with a guest, but the offender was not.

According to campus police, visitors must be registered with a student before they can enter a residence hall. Police say the NIU residence halls are also locked at all times.

"We take it very seriously," said NIU police commander Don Rodman. "The residence halls are locked 24/7, so anytime somebody is going to enter they would need to register with somebody that is affiliated with the university."

Police have a strict policy that a student must remain with your guest at all times.

In some areas of campus, police have extra patrols to help keep campus safe.

NIU junior Derrick Green, who works with the campus police department, reminds students to get help from several campus resources if they ever feel unsafe.

"We offer safe escort for people to help people get from wherever they want to go," Green said. "I know how hard the police department works I see it first hand, so I feel completely safe.

Green and other police urge students not to allow anyone into the dorm unless they also have a key card.

While the scene of the stabbing is still under investigation, police say the campus is safe.
