Man arrested, charged with murder for shooting near SwedishAmerican

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- A man was arrested on murder charges for after a shooting​ left one person dead near SwedishAmerican hospital Tuesday morning.

Quinton Smith, 23, of Rockford, is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon.

Police say the victim, a 20-year-old man, was in an argument with the suspect that led to fatal gunfire. Police say the incident is not at random.

The suspect then allegedly chased the victim in the 1300 block of State Street. The victim was taken to a hospital and died as of a result of his injuries.

Police say the victim was trying to enter the vehicle of another a 23-year-old woman, who was also shot and taken to the hospital. Her injuries are non-life-threatening.

Rockford Police Chief Dan O'Shea says officers responded to ShotSpotter alerts in the 100 block of Adams Street in Rockford around 5:45 a.m.

In a follow-up investigation, Smith was found at a home in the 700 block of Royal Avenue around 1:30 p.m.

Smith is being held in Winnebago County Jail on a $2 million bond. He is considered innocent unless proven guilty by the court of law.
