Local school gets new playground thanks to volunteers

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) ----- Dozens of volunteers got their hands dirty building a new playground for students at Haskell Elementary School Saturday morning.

In a team effort, members of Heartland Church and Kids Around the World banded together to break ground on the new play space, just in time for the start of the new school year.

For about a year, families on Maple Street haven't had the chance to enjoy the park in their neighborhood due to the unsafe equipment, but organizers say that's all about to change.

"It's great to have the community involvement out here, to come out and construct the playground because, this playground if you remember, was shut down last year because it was deemed unsafe. So, the children have gone a little while without a playground, so it's nice for us to be able to come together as a community and bring a playground back for the children," said organizer Tim Clauson.
