ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – In less than two years, a local non-profit has donated 1,000 blankets to military veterans to honor their service to our country.

Veteran Marine Corporal Noah Currier was the 1,000th servicemen to receive a handmade lapghan from Sergeant P’s Lapghan for Veterans. The group now includes 50 volunteers that crochet, knit, quilt, and sew each lapghan. Sergeant P’s makes smaller, wheelchair friendly afghans for veterans who are disabled or may be in a wheelchair in the future.

"When I started this organization I thought there would just be four or five of us little old ladies and maybe a guy or two knitting, crocheting, and making blankets for our veterans. Never did I realize that we would grow so quickly and that the need is definitely out there,” says Charlotte Kennedy with Sgt. P’s Lapghans for Veterans.

Twelve more lapghans were handed out to veterans today and the volunteers hope to produce another 1,500 in the next year.
