FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) -- Freeport will soon have an opportunity to carry out the legacy of former president Abraham Lincoln.

The Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area will expand to Freeport and several other Illinois cities as part an amendment act that passed Tuesday in the Senate.

Freeport leaders say the expansion will increase economic opportunities while Illinoisans work to preserve the historic site and create new recreation, tourism and educational projects.

The expansion also includes Livingston County and Union County. U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) introduced the legislation.

The Lincoln National Heritage Area includes 42 counties across central Illinois as one of the largest heritage areas in the nation. For more information on the Lincoln Heritage area, click here.
