LENA, Ill. (WIFR) -- Many schools and businesses were closed today in honor of veterans day, but one local high school chose to stay in session to give back to those who have served in the armed forces.
Lena-Winslow High School held its annual Veterans Day program this morning. Student council members organized a breakfast for area veterans and their families, which was followed by a tribute ceremony.
The school's choir, band and elementary students sang and played classic patriotic songs as a way to say thank you to the vets who fought and served for our freedom.
"We used to take the day off, and the reason we don't do that anymore is because we thought this was the best way for them to be educated and also be involved in honoring veterans," said Lena-Winslow High School Principal Mark Kuehl. "What I didn't want them to just understand is that Veteran's Day is just a day off of school."
The school will also honor veterans with a fireworks display tonight.
