ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - CherryVale mall is packed with people rushing to finish their holiday shopping before time runs out.
"It is definitely busy. We have waited in some long lines," said Desiree Dawson, shopper.
Some shoppers enjoy waiting until the last minute.
"I'm always a last-minute type of person. I can never do it ahead of time that's just how I am," said Cristal Belmontes, shopper.
While others just ran out of time.
"I wish I would have shopped before today because I have a lot going on but it's the way it fell this year," said Stephanie Urquhart.
But for Fanicka Lingelbach, she turns Christmas shopping into a family outing.
"I'm out here with my husband and my daughters and we are letting them do their Christmas shopping because we gave them money this year," Lingelbach said.
By shopping this way, Lingelbach says her kids get the gifts they want and she can stick to her budget.
"Of course you want to give your kids the best Christmas possible but you have to be budget-wise and smart," Lingelbach said.
According to the National Retail Federation, the average holiday shopper spends more than $1,000 on Christmas gifts.
This is why many shoppers budget for the holidays all year round.
"We have a Christmas clubs saving program so we usually put the money in there and then draw it out on Christmas to pay for all the presents,” Dawson said.
"I limit going out to eat and stuff that way I can buy them stuff they like," Belmontes said.
The National Retail Federation also says gift cards are the most popular item on people’s wish list.
