Woman dies, struck while crossing road at South Main

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- An elderly female has died after walking across a street on Rockford's southwest side, authorities say.

The woman was struck in the 3200 block of South Main near Harrison Avenue. Officers say it happened around 4:45 p.m.

The victim was pronounced dead on scene. A reporter on the scene says a body had been covered up.

The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department says she was walking in the road when she crossed in front of a southbound vehicle.

Police say to avoid the area near South Main and Harrison. Roads will be closed off as the crash is under investigation.

The accident drew a large police present to the area.
