Rep. Kinzinger sends letter to Facebook concerning scam and fake sites

WASHINGTON (WIFR) - U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (IL-16) is taking on Facebook when it comes to scam or fake accounts; after he says he was the victim of such a scam.

On Wednesday, Kinzinger sent a letter to Facebook Chairman Mark ZuckerbErg. In it., Kinzinger asks for an update on Facebook's stated attempts to ensure the safety and security of it's users. Kinzinger writes he's deeply concerned about romance scams initiated on Facebook; specifically those impersonating military personal, gaining the trust of unsuspecting users and convincing them to send money.

Kinzinger tells the New York Times of a specific incident in 2015 when a woman traveled from India to Kinzinger's Rockford office saying she developed a relationship with Kinzigner on Facebook.

In the letter Kinzinger says he's in the early stages of legislation which would force social media sites to do more to fight the problem.
