UPDATE: ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Rockford police say they're pleased with the turnout of their second fundraiser to get another K-9 and other department essentials.

The department says final totals aren't in yet, but donations from the "In Dogs We Trust" fundraiser at the Josef Barbados steakhouse are at $47,000 -- which passes the $40,000 raised last year.

The donations will go toward the purchase of a new K-9, along with training and other equipment.

ROCKFORD Ill. (WIFR) -- Police and their fury partners do a lot of the work that keeps our community protected and the community is holding a fundraiser in hopes of adding a sixth four-legged officer to the Rockford Police Department.

Friends of the Rockford Police came together to have the second annual "In Dog We Trust" fundraiser. Mayor McNamara acted as the "Celebrity Host" and was joined by police chief Dan O’Shea and State Representative John Cabello as "Celebrity Bartenders,” last year’s fundraiser raised enough money to get a new dog and they are hoping for the same outcome this year.

"Last year we seized 27 illegal guns, and we already have 27 here to date now. We are at a 17 percent increase from our seized last year and that is just from having the 5th dog. So if we can add a 6th tonight I think you are going to see more progress," said Duane Johnson, K9 unit supervisor for the Rockford Police Department.
