UPDATE: Police release video with person of interest from Beloit murder

Officials say a vehicle was sitting at the location for several hours when a concerned resident reported that a person was unconscious in the vehicle.

James Tomten, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene after police arrived. Police say he suffered a gunshot wound in a beige/tan Cadillac Escalade.

Police released a video of an individual believed to be with Tomten on the east side of Beloit prior to his death. The person of interest on video is described as a man with a red hoodie, blue jeans and red tennis shoes.

The Rock County Medical Examiner releases the name of the Janesville man killed Saturday in Beloit.

Investigators found James Tomten, 28, of Janesville just after 2:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Vine Street.

Preliminary tests show the cause of death as homicidal firearm trauma.

Beloit Police are holding a news conference at 2 p.m. Monday.


Investigators are looking into a homicide that happened in the 800 block of Vine Street around 12:20 p.m. Saturday.

Beloit police officers were called there for a report of a subject down. A 28-year-old man from Janesville was found dead at the scene.

This homicide is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Investigators say they believe that the victim and the suspect knew each other, so they don't believe there is a threat to the public any longer.
