SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WIFR) -- An Illinois resident has died after being hospitalized for a vaping-related illness, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
The individual developed a severe respiratory illness after recently vaping, per IDPH.
Over the past week, IDPH says the number of cases involving people who developed respiratory symptoms after using e-cigarettes or vaping has doubled.
Twenty-two people, ranging in age from 17-38 years, have experienced respiratory illness from e-cigarettes or vaping. IDPH says it's also working with local health departments to investigate 12 other cases.
“The severity of illness people are experiencing is alarming, and we must get the word out that using e-cigarettes and vaping can be dangerous,” said IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. “We requested a team from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help us investigate these cases, and they arrived in Illinois on Tuesday.”
Cases have been reported in Chicago and Champaign, in addition to Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Madison, McHenry, Peoria, St. Clair, and Will counties.
Respiratory symptoms from vaping include coughing, fatigue and shortness of breath.
