CHICAGO (WIFR) -- Illinois lawmakers have introduced a bill that would call for making Chicago its own state.

Rep. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville), Rep. Chris Miller (R-Robinson) and Rep. Darren Bailey (R-Louisville) co-sponsored HR0101, which was filed on Feb. 7. The bill attempts to urge U.S. Congress to separate Chicago from Illinois.

The bill claims "the majority of the residents in downstate Illinois disagree with the City of Chicago on key issues," including gun ownership, abortion and immigration.

Since the bill is a house resolution, it does not need approval from the Senate or governor. However, it has not yet been to be assigned to a committee.
