Illinois among highest states for credit card fraud per study

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Illinois was ranked with the sixth-highest credit card fraud among U.S. states and the District of Columbia, according to a recent study from Credit Sesame.

Illinois averaged 48 credit card fraud complaints per 100,000 residents, higher than the national average of 33 per 100,000 residents.

The study also looked into information from the Federal Trade Commission to rank the states. Other factors used in the rankings include:

-130 total identity theft complaints per 100,000 residents
-39 percent of credit card fraud of total ID theft complaints
-$60,960 household median income
-13 percent poverty level

Connecticut, Nevada, Florida and California all ranked ahead of Illinois in credit card fraud.

The District of Columbia ranked first with 82 credit card fraud complaints per 100,000 residents.
