Illinois State Police to crack down on left lane drivers

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Illinois State Police will be going undercover to catch drivers who drive in the left lane unsafely.

Police will start enforcing a traffic law passed two years ago, which prohibits drivers from lingering in the left lane.

Under the law, the left lane is only intended for passing or moving over for an emergency vehicle. The law applies to traffic on four-lane, two-way roadways.

Drivers can also use the left lane legally to avoid an obstruction to the right or when an expressway is temporarily restricted to one lane.

Police say drivers who misuse the left lane could be fined up to $120.

Illinois State Police used the hashtag #LeftLaneLollygaggersBeware on a Facebook post last week to remind drivers of the law.
