SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WIFR) -- The Illinois House approved a bill that would require public schools to teach about the roles and contributions of LGBTQ people.
Sponsored by Rep. Anna Moeller (D- Elgin), HB0246 would require schools to add lessons on prominent lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender figures in their history curriculum.
The LGBTQ education would be provided under the Illinois Human Rights Act. The bill would also require all textbooks to be purchased with grand funds that are non-discriminatory.
The bill now heads to the Senate after passing the House with a 60-42 vote on Wednesday.
