ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – A road improvement project that took three years to complete is now done and that means drivers have speedier and safer access to I-90 in Northern Winnebago County.
The Illinois 173 Expansion Project promises additional commercial opportunities for the section from Perryville Road to I-90. The project began three years ago. The final section of highway replaces a two-lane road. It is also much straighter than the previous roadway.
Leaders believe the completed Route 173 is important.
“The 173 with the five lane and the interchange that was put in, we have access to the world. You are basically 70 minutes from Chicago, 10 miles from Wisconsin, you can go anywhere you want to go,” says Machesney park Mayor Jerry Bolin.
Three weeks ago, the Machesney Park Village Board voted to approve a 90 acre business district that will sit along the northwest side of 173 directly across from Rock Cut State Park.
