Ice, winds create problem for Com Ed crews in the region

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Hundreds of people in northwest Illinois are dealing with power outages during Saturday's winter weather blast.

Com Ed spokesperson George Gaulrapp says rather than one large area losing power, crews have seen small pockets of outages affecting only a dozen people in each area. The largest area affected had just about 120 customers, but repairs were quickly made.

Ice, wind and snow create more challenges for the Com Ed repair team. Gaulrapp says power lines snap under the weight of the ice and the high winds.

He added that while the main roads might be improving, the rural roads are dangerous and that is slowing response time.

"Safety is always our number one priority for employees and customers," Gaulrapp said. "We are taking the roads carefully."
