BELVIDERE, Ill. (WIFR) -- Herman Hollingsworth, a 96-year-old Navy veteran who lives in Belvidere, was treated to quite the holiday surprise on Wednesday.

Green Acres Lawn Care transformed Hollingsworth's home into a Winter Wonderland. The heartwarming surprise comes from the Decorated Family Program of Christmas Décor.

Hollingsworth has been battling some health issues, so his wife nominated him for the program, one in which volunteers surprise military familes by decorating their homes for the holidays.

Herman came home to his Winter Wonderland surprise on Wednesday afternoon. Volunteers brought the North Pole to Herman's home with lights, garland, trees and ornaments.

Volunteers were excited to help Herman because they wanted to give back to a local veteran and make his spirit bright for the holidays.

"I think its phenomenal," says Josh Robertson from the Green Acres Group. "I'm very proud to be able to do it and provide this for them. I wish we would have more nominations and be able to offer it to more people around the holiday times."

Christmas Decor is in its 17th year surprising military families in the stateline. The organization has helped more than 1 million men and women of the armed forces and their families.
