ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- "Healing Headbands," a New York based program, has introduced an art project to Rockford in its efforts to help children battling cancer.
The project involves children painting their hopes and visions on paper, then taking their creations to make a one-of-a-kind personalized headband.
Program leaders Barbara Grapstein and Joan Accollo say the headbands tell anecdotes to support children suffering from serious illnesses..
"At the end they end up receiving their healing headband, and it reminds them of that time that they had fun with two adult women who were silly and crazy," said Grapstein. "They get to wear something that they can keep with them and treasure for as long as they live."
Grapstein had the chance to present this program to local organization leaders on Friday, who had the chance to design their own healing headbands.
