UPDATE: Harmon sentenced to 13 years in prison for second degree murder

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- The 19-year-old who shot and killed a 17-year-old boy last year learns his fate in court. Martaivis Harmon is sentenced to 13 years in prison for the second degree murder of 17-year-old Akeem Smith. Smith was shot last March.

According to police Harmon, Smith and two other boys got into a fight in the 3200 block of Parkside Avenue last March. When officers arrived on scene, they say they found Smith shot several times. Smith was taken to a local hospital where he later died. Police say Harmon, along with another teen showed up to Rockford Memorial Hospital. They had both been shot multiple times. Detectives determined Harmon and two other teens were involved in Smith's death. Tonia Smith, Akeem's mother attended Harmon’s sentencing today. She told the courtroom what kind of person her son was.

"Akeem liked to smile, sing and take care of kids. It just feel like something missing. I'm lost,” said Tonia Smith.

Martaivis Harmon is sentenced to 13 years in prison along with two years of mandatory supervised release.

Javontavious Benford and Retavian Jefferson are the two other teens police say are involved in Smith's death. They are still awaiting sentencing.

18-year old Martaivis Harmon has pled guilty to second degree murder of 17-year old Akeem Smith.

Rockford Police say on March 29th, 2016, Harmon shot and killed Smith during a fight in the 3300 block of Parkside Drive. Investigators arrested Harmon and two other men in connection with the murder.

Harmon is scheduled to be sentenced October 19th.
