ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - As a way to remember Officer Jaimie Cox as well as other fallen Rockford police officers, a group of people petitions the city to rename the Morgan Street Bridge.

The bridge crossing over the Rock River turned blue following the death of Officer Cox earlier this month. Now his family, as well as families throughout the city, want the bridge renamed as the Police Memorial Bridge.

Those pushing for the change say it's another way to honor the legacy of our fallen officers.

"Because they're heroes. Anytime anyone calls them they would answer it always so it's important to help them. We're trying to bridge the gap between the community and the police officers and give our officers some moral support and honor our fallen ones," says Trina Schuster who is collecting signatures.

Schuster says they are hoping to collect at least 3,000 signatures.
