ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Students at Galapagos Rockford Charter and neighbors who live around the area will soon have a new playground and it's all thanks to a first grade student.
The school tells us one of the first graders wanted a playground for himself and his classmates to use on breaks during the school days. Galapagos initially wanted to build the playground in just eight hours Sunday starting at 9 a.m. and finishing at 5 p.m. Unfortunately, they say they didn't quite make the goal but they're still planning to finish Monday and hope students can play on it by Tuesday.
"It was literally a first grader who came and told the principal that not only he needed a playground, but that all his classmates needed a playground and he advocated, said the exercise would make them all better students," says Galapagos Rockford Charter School CEO Michael Lane.
The school says once built, the playground will be the only one in a one- mile radius.
