UPDATE: FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) – After the city of Freeport announces that it was cutting this year’s local firework show, a group of business owners announced a revived effort to provide a firework show in Freeport.
The event will be named Light the Night Freedom Fest.
This year’s event will only showcase fireworks, but the event is expected to expand as early as next year. The expanded event would include a parade, a community festival with music, food, family-friendly events and conclude with the fireworks show.
The annual event is completely funded by community donations and next year’s planning will start in August of 2018.
This year’s event will take place on July 7 at the Stephenson County Fairgrounds.

FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) - The city of Freeport will not have a Fourth of July fireworks show this year.
City leaders say earlier this year the appointed fireworks committee disbanded and asked it to take over the show.
The city says it will not sponsor the fireworks due to budgetary constraints, the close timing of the Stephenson County Fair and the inability to form a new group to coordinate the event.
Officials say for the past three years, the city has said it would not fund fireworks with tax dollars. It hopes a group will step forward to coordinate and fund raise for a show next year.
Belvidere will hold its fireworks show on Sunday, June 24 at the Boone County Fairgrounds. Durand will hold its show on July 4 at Durand High School. Galena will also hold fireworks on July 4 at Grant Park while Stockton holds it's on the same day at Blackhawk Park.
