Freeport, Ill (WIFR) -- Esther Xiang is an ambitious Freeport High School senior who is headed to the ivy league. Last week she committed to Harvard University after receiving a full ride scholarship.
Xiang says she never thought she would attend such a prestigious university, admitting that when she applied to Harvard it was on a whim. She had applied to over 10 different schools and was ecstatic when she found out she got into the school some only dream about attending.
“I stared at the screen for like 20 minutes before I even opened to see if I had gotten in or not,” says Xiang. “I filmed my reaction and I just freaked out what I saw the word congratulations.”
While Xiang is in the top two of her class and has high SAT scores, she wants other students to know that getting into a school like Harvard isn't all about numbers; it's also about your unique individuality and how you impact the community.
"You never really know what’s going to happen because the whole college admissions process is really random and kind of a crap-shoot at times,” said Xiang. “So I would just say to apply to bunch of schools you really like because you may get in and it'll really change your life."
Xiang graduates in a few short weeks, but she has already made connections with fellow Harvard students.
“I went to a visit day and met so many unique people from all over the country and world,” said Xiang. “I’m just so excited to start school!”
