FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) -- It's a friendship that equally helps both Tanner and Abby for the better and now their friendship is going viral, stealing hearts all across the internet.

It's a friendship much deeper than what's on the surface.

"Tanner has a lot of girlfriends and I'm one of his girlfriends as he would say," says Abby Smith.

It's a relationship Tanner Bufton yearned for and one that Abby Smith needs more than you would think.

"To me, he doesn't really have Down syndrome, he's just my friend," says Smith.

While Tanner lives with a genetic disorder that may make people see him differently, Abby can relate, although her illness is not so easily seen.

"Basically five years ago, I found out I had depression and when I met Tanner he started making me really happy," says Abby.

"Can I steal you for prom?" Tanner asked Abby in a "promposal" video that's stealing the hearts of thousands on social media.

"I just wanted to get it across to my friends and family that I had a prom date and a pretty cute one," says Abby.

"To have a best friend like Abby has in Tanner is comforting to her. In a very large high school, the high school it's sometimes a very dark place and Tanner is a light in that school to her," says Kathleen Smith, Abby's mom.

Abby has also made a lasting effect in Tanner's life.

"Abby has made him more open and she almost makes him become a different person, where he is outgoing. Whenever I talk about Abby he will start smiling and he'll start blushing," says Tanner's sister, Korrie Harnish.

"I've thought about him coming to my wedding and being a part of my wedding, and I really think that we'll be together for a long time," says Abby.

Abby says in the future she wants to help people with mental illness similar to hers and she also wants to become a special needs teacher. Abby and Tanner are looking forward to prom on May 6.
