Freeport catholic community celebrates first responders with 'Blue Mass'

FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) -- The Freeport catholic community is coming together to honor all first responders and law enforcement during the church’s annual blue mass.

The church service is an opportunity for community members to show their gratitude for the hard work law enforcement does every day. Emergency vehicles were blessed before the service and a special prayer was recited for both police and firefighters. Mass organizers say this is a tradition that has been going on for 10 years, and they hope it continues for decades more.

"I think this is one small way we can let them know that we appreciate all they do,” Stephanie Helms, event organizer. “It’s not everyone who runs into dangers way to protect the rest of us and we owe them a debt of gratitude for being so willing to do that.”
