Former director of Rockford Better Business Bureau dies

ROCKFORD, Ill. (BBB Press Release) -- The Rockford Better Business Bureau announced its former director of the Rockford Regional Office, Mary Ann Wixom, died April 22 after a battle with cancer.

Wixom was a stay at home mom when her children were young and was working for the Rockford Chamber of Commerce when discussions began between the Chamber and the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois about opening an office in Rockford.

Having handled consumer issues for the Chamber, Wixom was the obvious and logical choice to run the office, which she did for 15 years.

“I would say most people have a job, a place where they go to work; for Mary Ann, it was not just a job it was a calling,” says Dennis Horton, director of the Regional BBB office. “From day one she was the backbone of the Rockford BBB and remained so until her retirement.”

“The Better Business Bureau stands for ethical behavior, honesty and integrity; that’s what she brought to the office and that’s what she instilled in all of us whom she mentored,” noted Horton.

Until shortly after her retirement, Mrs. Wixom was a very proud member of the Rockford Downtown Rotary. Most recently, she was a volunteer at Anderson Japanese Gardens, a member of the Golden Agers and the Rockford YMCA Senior Woman’s Club.

Despite being surrounded by an office full of Chicago Bear’s fans, she remained a dedicated fan of “her Packers”.

Wixom is survived by her daughter Lisa (Brian) Meade and son Paul (Denise) Wixom, three grandchildren, and her BBB family.

Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, April 24th 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Olsen Funeral & Cremation Services, North Main Street Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, April 25th at 12:00 Noon, St. Rita’s Catholic Church, 6254 Valley Knoll Drive.
