ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- SwedishAmerican celebrates the first baby born at the hospital's new Level III neonatal intensive care unit.
A routine check-up turned into much more than that for Meridith Meyers when doctors noticed her blood pressure spiked. Doctors worried it could become dangerous for her baby.
The SwedishAmerican medical team induced labor nearly two weeks ago. After 10 hours, Lydia Lopez entered the world, weighing two and a half pounds.
Lydia's family praised what they called exceptional care.
"The last couple of weeks have been hard, but they're helping us get through it," said Lydia's father Rafael Lopez. "They're doing a great job here. My next baby will probably be here, and the level of service here is just phenomenal."
To celebrate the birth and the progress little Lydia is making, SwedishAmerican staff presented her parents with a commemorative gift basket and a year's worth of free diapers.
SwedishAmerican's neonatal intensive care unit features 10 beds, providing care for babies for up to 32 weeks and babies born with critical illness at all gestational ages.
