According to reports from 105.3 The Fan, a Dallas-radio station, Elliott contacted McKenzie's family behind the scene to offer comfort and to pay for his funeral expenses.
McKenzie was raised in the Metro East St. Louis area in Illinois. Elliott came from a similar background. He was born in Alton, Illinois and played high school football in the St. Louis area.
McKenzie had been recently featured by Sports Illustrated magazine as one of the "Six Teens Who Will Rule the Future in Sports."
Tragedy in STL this wkd as 8th-grade football phenom was killed by a stray bullet. I’ve learned Ezekiel Elliott (from the area) reached out to the family to cover the funeral costs. Kind gesture from someone who continues to grow off the field. Sad story: https://t.co/PMUSJOXOHJ— Ben Rogers (@BenRogers) May 8, 2019
