BELVIDERE, Ill. (WIFR) -- The Fiat Chrysler assembly plant in Belvidere has been forced to stop production this week after a drop in orders for new vehicles.

FCA spokesperson Jodi Tinson confirmed the shutdown, which is expected to last at least one week.

Tinson says the move was to “align production with demand.”

Earlier this year, Fiat Chrysler laid off more than 1,300 workers at the plant after a scheduling change eliminated the 'C' shift. Company leaders also blamed slowing demand for that staffing change.

The Belvidere plant makes the Jeep Cherokee.
