Coroner: Winnebago County inmate found hanging in jail cell

A Winnebago County inmate was found hanging in a jail cell Sunday night.

The Winnebago County Coroner's Office says Joseph McCormick, 26, was the victim. An autopsy determined he died from asphyxia due to hanging.

The coroner's office says McCormick was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead by medical staff.

McCormick had been

on attempted murder and armed robbery charges.

The death is under investigation by the Winnebago Boone Integrity Task Force.
