ROCKFORD, Ill (WIFR)--- It was all hands on deck at the Auburn and Main St roundabout, with people from all over the community coming together to show veterans that they are pillars in the Rockford neighborhood.
"Over the years a lot of the original planting had died out and what we're doing is we're planting a lot of color kind of as a tribute," says Ernie Redfern with the Friends of Veterans Memorial Circle.
The project was 100% community funded and a 100% community effort. There were more than 300 volunteers from different organizations including the Newcomer program and the Auburn high school ROTC.
"It was very fulfilling that I personally get from this being able to have myself and my cadets come out here and just honor the veterans," says LaDarius Jackson with Auburn high school JROTC.
At the end of the day, this project is a token of appreciation and a tribute to those who have served for our freedom.
