WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) -- The Winnebago County board moves one step closer to ensure that pot production will be permanently weeded out in the unincorporated part of the county.
The board's public safety committee unanimously approved an ordinance that would prohibit the sale cannabis in unincorporated areas of Winnebago County. This does not affect cities or villages within the county like Rockford which already has the Sunnyside Dispensary in operation. There has yet to be any requests for permits in unincorporated Winnebago County but the board is doing this ban as a preemptive measure. It will go before the full board next week.
"We've received countless phone calls emails, letters from several thousand people in the county asking us to prohibit cannabis in Winnebago County. Unfortunately we're unable to do that because it's a state law. But we feel a duty to the citizens that were against cannabis in Winnebago County we felt that it would be a duty to do whatever we could as a County Board,” said District 1 board member Aaron Booker.
The committee also approved unanimously the acceptance of three department of justice grants which will go towards domestic violence prevention. That includes a $900,000 grant with a portion going to Remedies Renewing Lives.
