PECATONICA, Ill. (WIFR) ----- Community members in Pecatonica gathered today to observe a historical document revealing a lot about their history.

The Pecatonica Historical Society came across a mustering out report from Company B of the 74th Illinois Regiment. Company B came out of the Village in 1862 during the height of the Civil War.

The authentic document includes signatures from the surviving soldiers. The event showcased this newly discovered document as well as other Civil War artifacts. Event organizers hope findings like these will inspire people to know more about their history.

"Between the historical society, the library and the community, is try to offer all of that information out for the people if and when they do get interested so that they can come in and have that easy access to be able to find out who their ancestors were and where they came from," said Civil War reenactor Derek Squires.

Squires adds the document reveals a significant portion of the Pecatonica male population ended up going to fight in the Civil War over 150 years ago.
