ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- The Chicago Rockford International Airport now offers the chance for a tropical getaway.

You can now take a direct flight to Costa Rica on Fridays from now until the end of April.

The airport celebrated its first flight to Costa Rica at 10:20 a.m. Friday morning by hosting a departing event where passengers could win prizes and the chance to take another trip.

Costa Rica joins Cancun and Punta Cana as the airport's international destinations through Apple Vacations.

Some locals have been taking trips with Apple Vacations for years. They say flying out of Rockford is very convenient.

"We've been traveling with a great group of friends, and I would just recommend it for anyone," said passenger Elizabeth Cesare-Utes. "They go every year in January, and it's just an amazing time."
